India Agri & Food updates - 30 April'15 !

1. Rajkot-based agriculture entrepreneur has turned popular social media app WhatsApp into a classifieds marketplace that allows farmers to trade goods such as grains, vegetables, seeds, irrigation equipment and tractors, among others.

2. In a bid to help cash-starved domestic producers, the Union Cabinet raised the import duty on sugar to 40 per cent from 25 per cent on Wednesday. The move will curb imports as sugar prices are depressed, with a fifth consecutive year of surplus output in the offing.

3.  Maharashtra Chief Minister has asked for help from former Israeli Prime Minister on helping farmers in Maharashtra who are ending their lives in large numbers due to the agrarian crisis.

4. Parliament's committee on agriculture has urged the government to ensure that support prices for various crops give farmers 50% profit margin and rejected the agriculture ministry's view that such a step will distort the market.
