India Agri & Food updates - 08April'15 !

1. Domestic wheat production is likely to slide by almost 5 per cent after significant tracts across key wheat-growing States, such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, were damaged by unseasonal rainfall and hailstorms through much of last month.

2. Oilmeal exports dipped 63 per cent in the financial year ended March to ₹4,278 crore.

3. The drop in oilmeal exports was due to a 76.3% slump in soymeal sales to a low 659,593 tonnes in 2014/15.

4. The Southern India Mills’ Association has appealed to the Textiles Ministry to direct Cotton Corporation of India to offload cotton, sell it through e-auction and avoid rate speculation.

5. Unseasonal rains and hailstorms, being witnessed from February-end, have damaged rabi (winter-sown) crops in about 113 lakh hectares of area in the country. Total cultivable area in rabi season stands at 600 lakh hectares.

6. The Centre today said it is ready to relax quality norms for procurement of wheat from farmers in view of crops being affected by the unseasonal rains and hailstorms in various parts of the country.
