India Agri & Food Updates - 16April'15 !

1. The ₹400-crore Keventer Agro – flagship of the Kolkata-based MK Jalan-controlled ₹2,000-crore Keventer Group – is aiming for a national roll out of popular ‘Dwarf Cavendish’ banana variety, also referred as Grand Nain (G-9) variety, in a phased manner.

2. Vegetable oil imports were up 27 per cent at 11 lakh tonnes in March compared to 8 lakh tonnes (lt) in the same period last year due to higher demand and lower crushing by domestic mills.

3. According to information available on the APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) website, India imported 14,571.90 tonnes of fresh pears in 2013-14, valued at around ₹78.93 crore. There were no imports in 2012-13, nor in 2011-12.

4. Surplus of sugar in both domestic and international markets will continue to keep sugar prices under pressure in the near term, a report by ratings agency ICRA says.

5. Sugar industry in India is going through an unprecedented crisis as sugarcane prices mount year on year, driven by populist State governments, and sugar prices drop on surplus production, according to the Indian Sugar Mills Association.

6. According to the Japanese brokerage firm Nomura, the possibility of El Nino conditions is developing this year and this could possibly push food inflation temporarily higher.

7. Untimely rains cool temperature, hit mango supply; farmers face losses.
