1. Stating that agriculture in India has tremendous potential of being transformed into a vibrant sector, a delegation of US companies, which recently visited New Delhi, has called for necessary policy reforms to enhance foreign direct investment in the food processing sector.
2. The government, under pressure to check retail onion prices that have shot up to Rs 80 per kg across the country, today approved bids for import of 1,000 tonnes of onion at Rs 45 per kg and has decided to buy more from overseas markets to boost domestic supply.
3. While in retail the oinion prices are roaring at Rs.70 to 80 per Kg, growers and farmers are not even fetching 25 to 30 Rs per Kg, with middle men making a merry of the demand surge and supply shortage.
4. Mediterranian diet comprising of high levels of Omeg-3 fatty acids would help in prevention of Obesity and Heart diseases by burning calories as per scientists of Liverpool University and Saint Lukes Mid America Heart Institute.

1. The deficient monsoon in Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh is set to impact output of key kharif crops including jowar, soyabean, tur, maize and cotton.

2. Dehydrated onions and Onion powder can beat price fluctuations.

3. Due to scarcity of rainfall prevailing in the 13 districts of A.P state, only 8.54 lakhs hectares of Paddy is being cultivated out of a total of 16.75 Lakhs hectares.

4. The combined High Court of A.P & Telangana expressed serious concerns on the usage of Calcium Carbide for early ripening of fruits. Notices are being issued for such fruit business entitites.

5. Weak rains pose a risk to tur crop, while imports from Africa may soften prices.

6. The government has asked public sector undertaking MMTC to import 10,000 tonnes of onions from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt and China to increase availability of the commodity and tame rising prices, which touched Rs 80 a kg in the national capital.

1. The Bombay high court has ruled that the chief executive of India’s food regulator, the FSSAI, had “acted in an emergent, drastic and arbitrary” fashion in ordering Nestlé to withdraw its popular Maggi noodles from the shelves in June.

2. Mondelēz did not breach competition rules following a complaint from a distributor it was placing unfair terms on rural stockists, rule Indian authorities.

5. India’s foodgrain production is estimated to have declined 4.66 per cent to 252.68 million tonnes (m.t.) in 2014-15 crop year due to poor monsoon and unseasonal rains in February-March.

3. It’s a tough contest between the State-run India Meteorological Department (IMD) and private operator SkyMet, on who will get the right forecast on the South-West Monsoon. India Agriculture & Food updates - 14Aug'15 !

1. The ban on Maggi noodles has been lifted by an Indian court (Mumbai) but more testing must be done before it is allowed to return to the market.The Bombay high court has ruled that the chief executive of India’s food regulator, the FSSAI, had “acted in an emergent, drastic and arbitrary” fashion in ordering Nestlé to withdraw its popular Maggi noodles from the shelves in June.

2. Nestlé India has voiced its disappointment at the “unprecedented step” by the Indian government of going to the courts to seek nearly US$100m in damages for “unfair trade practices” in the wake of the Maggi noodles affair.

3. RBI hass announced that for the year 2015-16, on short term crop loans to be sanctioned by banks, the interest rates would be decreased by 2% and it would be additional 3% reduction for those farmers who does the repayments on schedule, thereby keeping the interest rate at just 4%.

4. Faced with fierce global competition, the onion dehydration units that convert the bulb into dry flakes and powder are now looking at the domestic market to sustain and expand their business.

1.  Wagh Bakri Tea Group (The tea consumed by Mahatma Gandhi) plans to buy up to 10 tea plantations in Assam.

2. Buoyed by reports of Centre stepping in to promote exports of surplus sugar stocks, prices of the sweetener are seen rebounding from ten-year lows over past few days.

3. The Government has allowed export of rice bran oil in bulk and other edible oil in branded consumer packs of up to five kg with a minimum export price of $900 (₹57,363) a tonne.

4. Sree Murali Mohana Boiled and Raw Rice Mill Pvt Ltd., of East Godavari,  a leading rice exporter and domestic merchant, released Bell brown rice and Bell idly ravva under its Bell brand on Sunday.

India Agriculture & Food Updates for week of 08/08/15

1. While the per Kilogram retail rate of Tomatoes during August is anywhere between Rs.40 to Rs.80 in places like Delhi, Kerala, Odisha, Maharashtra and Mysore, the farmers are getting only Rs.4 per kg in Madanapalle Market yard, while the transportation cost might sum up to a maximum of Rs.5 per kg.

2. The A.P.Govt has waived farm loans worth Rs.880 crores benefitting 2.73 lakh farmers in the 3rd phase.

3. With Ripening Groups forming a syndicate and compromising the interests of farmers, the Banana farmers are fetching a maximum of Rs.7 per kg.

4. The top growing states for Onion in India are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhyapradesh, Gujarat, Bihar and Telugu states of A.P & Telangana. While Govt has mandated that there should not be more than Rs.4 commission to be charged per 100 onions, the market yard agent seems to be collected any where from Rs.6 to Rs.11.

5. In a move intended to prevent foreign wheat from flooding the domestic market, the Centre imposed a 10 per cent import duty on wheat.

6. Oilmeal exports dipped 86 per cent to 18,410 tonnes in July compared to 1.32 lakh tonnes (lt) in the same period last year.
