India Agri & Food updates - 29April'15 !

1. As per latest Govt. estimates, Sugarcane farmer arrears to touch Rs 21,000 Crore.

2. Government's wheat procurement this year may fall short of the initial target of 30 million tonnes (MT) due to crop damage following a recent spell of unseasonal rains and hailstorms.

3. Rains and hailstorm affected 189 lakh hectares of crop area in the country, Agriculture Minister  today said in Rajya Sabha, revising his earlier figure of 94 lakh hectares.

4. Overall production in the country based on the estimation of production in major coconut growing states showed a 10% fall in 2014-15 over the previous year.

5. The CDB (Coconut Development Board) survey on production registered a decline in production in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka while the Tamil Nadu, Odisha, West Bengal and Maharashtra recorded an increase. The four southern states together comprise around 90% of the coconut production in the country.

6. Government today decided to raise import duty on sugar to 40 per cent, from 25 per cent, and remove excise duty on ethanol to help mills clear dues.

7. The government today did away with restrictions on imports of industrial and technical grade urea, a move aimed at improving ease of doing business in the country and checking diversion of urea.
