India Agri & Food updates - 08June'15 !

1.According to the data released by the Agriculture Ministry on Friday, the total area under Kharif crops stands at 61.27 lakh hectares (lh) – about 5.4 per cent lower than during the corresponding period the previous year when it touched 64.75 lh.

2.Cotton inventory, estimated at around 70 lakh bales at the close of 2014-15 season is expected to be the highest ever cotton stock carried by India after 2008-09. This huge volume of carry forward cotton stock would place the country in a comfortable position, the Chairman of The southern India Mills’ Association said.

3.After the Maggi row, the Government also wants to stop the sale of Nestle’s (Cerelac & Nestum) and Johnson & Johnson’s food and cosmetics products (baby powder & baby soap) in medical shops. 

4.Spot pepper prices continued to remain steady while the futures have shown an uptrend on Friday. Likely overseas demand in the coming days is attributed to the uptrend in the futures.

5.The Indian poultry industry is unfazed over the World Trade Organisation’s ruling against the Government’s ban against import of the US chicken. The industry, which sells about 20 crore live birds a month or 40 crore kilograms of meat a month, says Indian love fresh chicken.

6.Australia is looking into exporting pulses and oilseeds to India. Australian High Commissioner to India told BusinessLine.

7. Officials in the department of food and supplies in Delhi government said traders face a jail term of seven years if they were convicted for hoarding. They said all major mandis and markets in the state were being monitored to prevent hoarding of essential commodities.

8.Indian central Agriculture Minister will represent India at the 39th session of FAO, to be held at Rome in Italy and would conclude on June 9. FAO has 194 member nations.The main function of the conference is to determine the policy and approve the budget of the organisation.

9. An agri-business investors camp would be held here on June 12 to be hosted by International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). Agribusiness innovators and budding entrepreneurs will have an opportunity to present their ideas/ prototypes for individual advice.
