Global Agriculture, Food & Health updates - 25June'15 !

1. Ancient grains and seeds such as chia, flax and quinoa have been steadily infiltrating the US cereal, bakery and snacks aisles in recent years, but are now starting to generate a lot of excitement in the dairy category as well.

2. Popcorn manufacturers are pumping too much salt into their products, while leading consumers to believe they are a healthy snack, campaigners have claimed.

3. High-protein bread and pasta firm Dr Zak’s is now in 150 retailers throughout the UK and set to boost its presence further with the launch of its bagels.

4. Eight manufacturers (Huhtamäki, Nespak, Vitembal, Silver Plastics, Coopbox, Magic Pack, Sirap-Gema and Linpac) and two distributors (Ovarpack and Propack) of retail food packaging trays have been fined more than €115m for taking part in at least one of five separate cartels all over Europe.

5. Russia has confirmed it plans to extend a ban on Western food imports until early 2016 and may add new products to the list of banned goods.

6. Industry must work to minimize levels of inorganic arsenic in rice and rice-based snacks as high levels pose a health risk to consumers, warns Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).

7. More than half of consumers (56%) have not changed their eating habits despite media coverage of high sugar content in many foods and drinks, according to a market research report.

8. Fortifying flour with micronutrients is effective in decreasing national prevalence of anaemia, say researchers who looked at 32 different countries.

9. Millions of pounds worth of food is being wasted and the whole UK supply chain threatened by the migrant crisis is Calais – which has become like a “warzone” – warns the Freight Transport Association (FTA).

10. US agribusiness giant, Cargill, has opened an animal nutrition technology application center (TAC) in Hebei, China, which it said incurred an investment of $6.2 million.
