1. The government is preparing to deploy orbiting satellites to digitally map each farmland in the country, data from which will be used to provide tailor-made crop insurance cover to farmers in consultation with IRDA.
2. The 5th National Organic Farming Convention, will be held in Chandigarh at NITTR located in Sector 26 from February 28 to March 2. The event is expected to be the largest congregation of Indian organic farmers from across 25 States and the 2,500 participants will include policy makers, scientists, entrepreneurs and activists.
3. India is pushing the European Union (EU) to revoke an import ban on four vegetables: brinjal, snake gourd, taro and bitter gourd. The ban was imposed last year after fruit flies were found in some consignments from India.
4. A symposium on Genetic Engineering of Agricultural Crops and Livestock will be held at the University of Hyderabad from February 23-25. There sessions would comprise of genetic manipulation, biotechnology-Myths and facts,’ animal genetic engineering and bio-safety.
5. State Bank of India (SBI) will provide finance totalling Rs. 100 crore benefiting 3,000 small tea growers in the North East region soon.
6. Rabi crop acreage stood at 617.97 lakh hectares (lh), against 659.31 lh at the same time last year – a 6.3 per cent decrease, according to latest data released by the Agriculture Ministry.
