Global Food & Agri Updates - 15Feb'15

1. The China Agriculture Industry Development Fund has invested Rmb400 million into Fujian Provincial Pingtan County Ocean Fishing Group.

2. Kellogg’s 136% profit plunge for the fourth quarter (Q4) resulting in a $293 million net loss, can be attributed to poor cereal and snack sales in developed markets.

3. The 2015 Food Vision Big Debate will take place on 19 March 2015 during the truly global event for food and drink industry business leaders. It will be a highlight of the Food Vision programme, giving attendees the opportunity to have their say on the issues, challenges and opportunities their industry faces as world populations – and their appetites – increase.

4. Parmalat South Africa has recalled its apple juice after customer complaints prompted tests which found contamination with cleaning fluid.

5. People who eat organic foods have about half the pesticide exposure of those who eat conventional foods, according to a new study – but all are well within established safe limits.

6. Despite regional security concerns, attractive soft drinks sales growth in the Middle East and North Africa still entices manufacturers, according to Euromonitor International.

9. Stevia sweeteners derived from fermentation – without stevia plants – could be launched as early as 2016, according to Evolva Holding SA, the Swiss firm working on the technology with agri-giant Cargill.

12. FMC Corporation reported revenues in its health and nutrition sector of $828 million for its 2014 fiscal year.  Soft omega-3 demand for the year was a blemish on an otherwise robust sector performance, the company said.
