Global Agri & Food updates - 17Feb'2015 !

1. Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs) for foods and drinks again emerged as a sticking point in the latest round of trade negotiations between the EU and the US.

2. Unilever said it met its target of sending zero non-hazardous waste to landfill from its 240 factories around the world and this goal has saved it 200million Euros in costs.

3. Globally Whole Foods Market continues to evolve in the face of increased competition and gain market share by responding to consumers’ changing shopping habits with a broad online presence that is gaining traction.

4. The Chinese business regulator has given the green light for Wilmar International and First Pacific to acquire Australian food manufacturing major Goodman Fielder.

5. US household penetration of plant-based beverages has doubled in five years to more than 30%, with almond milk now accounting for almost 70% of sales and new nut-based milks such as cashew gaining momentum.

6. FAO and SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics team up to develop high tech tools to fight bird flu and other infectious diseases.

7.  Global fertilizer use is likely to grow by 1.8 percent a year to rise above 200.5 million tonnes in 2018, 25 percent higher than recorded in 2008.
