India Agri & Food Updates - 07March'15 !

1. Nepal’s CG Corp looking to acquire companies in India’s food and beverage sector through M&A route.

2. Pomegranates from India are facing stiff competition in Europe, where better quality and low-priced fruits from countries such as Israel and Peru are seen displacing them from the retail shelves.

3. Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) here has developed a precision farming module for bitter gourd cultivation, with the idea to lower pesticide contamination and to ensure more availability of this vegetable.

KVK, under CMFRI, has adopted ‘precision farming’ in which the water soluble nutrients and organic compounds are supplied exactly to the root zone through drip irrigation.

The fertiliser and organic compounds are applied to the plants along with irrigation water in a one-step process called ‘fertigation’ using a device called ‘ventury’. Plastic mulching is used to cover the planting beds, which, in turn, help in conserving the moisture and controlling the weeds.

4. A training programme on rearing sting-less bees (melliponiculture) at the Kasaragod-based Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) highlighted its potential as an income generating enterprise.

5. The Tamil Nadu Hill Banana Growers' Federation, Dindigul, near here, has won this year's Plant Genome Saviour Community Award.
